The developers of Ethereum tackle Holesky’s test problems when the basic developers’ execution call # 206, focusing on recovery strategies and the next septolia upgrade.
Ethereum developers met on February 27, 2025 for the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) # 206 call, chaired by Tim Beiko of the Ethereum Foundation. The meeting focused on recovering Holesky Testnet following its disturbance after activation of Perpra and discussed the next upgrade of Sépolia Testnet, according to Galaxy.com.
Holesky test challenges
The activation of Pectra on February 24 led to problems on the Holesky Testnet, mainly due to erroneous customer software in Geth, Nethermind and Besu. This caused a chain division, complicating efforts to stabilize the network. Consequently, only a minority of validators continued to function properly, which caused a detailed discussion on recovery strategies.
Tim Beiko explained the deep cause of failure, emphasizing the addresses of incorrect validator, which differ from those on the principal. The developers coordinate efforts to recover Holesky, including a mass reduction event offered to finalize the correct version of the network. However, this plan faces skepticism due to potential coordination challenges between customers and validators.
Sepolia upgrade plans
The developers also discussed the next upgrade of Sepolia Testnet, scheduled for March 5. The upgrade requires updated customer software from Geth, Nethermind and Besu, as well as a compulsory update for the Lodestar cl client CL. Tim Beiko confirmed that the activation date would remain unchanged, stressing the importance of updates in a timely time by node operators.
Long -term initiatives
In addition to immediate recovery efforts, developers have discussed longer -term initiatives to prevent similar incidents. The suggestions included the normalization of the fork configuration formats and the improvement of synchronization capacities of the control points between customers. These initiatives aim to improve network resilience and prepare for future Ethereum upgrades, such as Fusaka.
The ACDE call also highlighted the importance of Holesky as a test environment, the developers considering the creation of a new testnet if the recovery efforts are insufficient. Although a certain skepticism remains about the feasibility of current recovery plans, the discussion has provided valuable information on the management of the Ethereum network and the future adjustments of the protocol.
